I find it interesting that while Star Trek: First Contact is sometimes called a dumb action movie, the climax of the film isn’t a big battle, or even a small battle. The launch of the Phoenix might be considered action-y, but the guys inside don’t even know they’re under attack, they’re just thrilled by the flight itself. Picard has an action scene after, but by that point he’s already won and just trying to keep the Borg Queen from killing him to spite him.
Batman Beyond 2.0 only has a handful of issue left, but Higgins and Siegel use this one to setup more than push forward. That’s not a bad thing since what they setup is pretty damn awesome. This arc has been about Family, but it’s also clear it’s about living up (or down) to reputations. Everyone and everything seems to be heading towards a huge final confrontation. I can’t wait until it happens and when it does, issues like this one will make it all the better.
SPOILERS based on linked review
Should’ve guessed that Terry and Melanie suddenly going steady was just leading up to Melanie letting Terry down again. That’s the pattern of their relationship in the series until King’s Ransom broke the trend, and “one step forward, five steps back” has been the pattern of Terry’s relationships (romantic and platonic) in 2.0.
Adding to my list of “Things from Justice Lords Beyond that seem cool at first glance but make no sense when you think about them”: Terry and Melanie dating in the Lordsverse.
It almost seems natural when you first see it, because it was them being on opposite sides of the law that kept them apart, right? So when they’re both in gangs, there should be nothing keeping them apart. Except that in the Lordsverse, there was no reason for them to get together.
In the main universe, Melanie was attracted to Terry because he seemed so normal and wholesome and a change of pace from her criminal family life. In the Lordsverse, Terry’s with the Jokerz, so he doesn’t have the good boy thing going for him, and the Royal Flush Gang would probably consider simple thugs like the Jokerz beneath them. Lordsverse Melanie wouldn’t find much appealing about T that the main universe Melanie found appealing about Terry. Maybe she was attracted to him as a bad boy, but that’s a completely different dynamic from their main universe counterparts.
Reasons for attraction aside, in the Lordsverse Melanie would probably not even be in Gotham. The older Walkers all have British accents, so they’re probably a British family. They travel the world committing crimes, but in the Lordsverse there isn’t supposed to be crime, so why would the Walkers leave England? And in the main universe, they go to Gotham because of a family grudge with Batman, but in the Lordsverse, Batman was long dead and hadn’t resurfaced, so the RFG (if it even existed) would have no reason to settle in Gotham.
Overall, it feels like a piece of fanservice that doesn’t make much sense when you think about it. And I feel like there’s a lot of that in BB 2.0, and for major plot points along with fanservice moments, which is why I still won’t follow it.
